Once you get your much awaited tattoo, you need to treat it with utmost care. You can't hold your artist responsible for any kind of infection or problems, because his work is done. Now, it's your turn. And we shall give you a perfect way of keeping your tattoo to it's perfect shape! After all, you would not want your tattoo to look like a disaster just because of ignoring the aftercare procedure would you?
Leave That Bandage Alone!
An artist always puts that thin layer of cover for a good reason-in order to keep the tattoo safe from any kind of air born bacteria that might penetrate your wound. The new born excitement of viewing your tattoo again and again would make you want to remove the bandage and show it off a bit. But don't! Wait for a minimum of 2 hours before taking it off, unless it's covered saran wrap or some kind of plastic, in case of which one has to remove it sooner, since you do not want to suffocate your tattoo to any extent.
Wash and Treat
One has to wash his/her tattoo very carefully every time, especially since the time the bandage is removed. Firstly, make sure you use lukewarm water along with a mild anti-bacterial soap, and dab it on the tattoo area. Not harshly, but with soft touches. Make sure one does not use a washcloth or anything abrasive. Just wipe the lather off with your hands slowly. If your wound feels slimy or slippery, it's most probably the plasma oozing out, in case of which you need not worry, just try removing it much of it as you can. When the plasma dries on the skin surface, it would eventually create scabs. Make sure you dab the area with Tat Wax or A&D after cleaning it and drying it off well.
Specialty Products and Lotions
According to your convenience and preference, one can also use speciality products such as Tattoo Goo or even H2Ocean, for a span of 3-5 days.
Bathing, Showering, Hot Tubs, and Swimming
If you are skeptical about taking a shower after getting a tattoo done, we assure you that there is absolutely no harm if your tattoo gets wet. A slight amount of water wont do harm. But make sure you DO NOT submerge it completely during a shower or hot bath, since that would cause tremendous amount of damage to the inked are. If in case you manage to get some soap or shampoo on the tattoo area at that time, remove it quickly. Pools and seas should be avoided for 2 weeks at least.
Scabbing and Peeling
After a few days, you will notice some peeling and possibly a little scabbing. Excessive scabbing could indicate a poorly-done tattoo, but a little is sometimes normal and there is no need to panic. Apply warm moist compresses to the scabs for about 5 minutes 2-3 times a day to soften them and they will eventually come off on their own. (Do not apply ointment or lotion to a softened scab â€Â“ wait for it to dry) You will also start to itch, just like a sunburn when it begins to heal. The advice here is, donâ€Â™t pick, and donâ€Â™t scratch! If the skin itches, slap it. If it is peeling, put lotion on it. And if it is scabbing, just leave it alone. Your tattoo is almost healed, and now is not the time to ruin it!
Protection from the sun
Once you've gotten yourself inked, forget the usual sunbathing spree you keep going on to. The sun can literally damage a mesmerizing tattoo in the quickest way possible. In cases of excessive heat temperatures, make sure you use 30 SPF sunblock, which would keep your tattoo glowing at all times.
